From the very moment that World in Conflict (otherwise known as WiC) was started, it's creators Massive Entertainment knew they had a hit on their hands. World in Conflict is a fast paced real-time strategy game set in the year 1989 where the Soviet Union's economy is on the verge of collapsing. In real life, this lead to the dissolution of the Soviet Union as we knew it, however this game provides to us an alternate reality view into what the world would be like, if the Soviet Union attempted to extort the European Powers into giving the Soviet Union aid. When their attempts were flatly refused by the European Powers, the Soviet Union then would follow the path of warfare, rather than to simply lie down and accept it's fate.
Alternately, this game is also considered to be a real-time tactical game, mainly because many of the basic elements found in a real-time strategy game. Features such as an economic spectrum; base, city, or empire building; and a basic tech-line to follow are all missing from this game. It was also stated by Nicklas Cederstrom, one of the designers of the game, that this was indeed a real-time tactical game.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer games in WiC are administered through Massgate, and are online only and does not have a LAN lobby. Massgate supports up to 16 players in each server. There are three gametypes in a online game of WiC and they are as follows:
- Assault: These game's are similar in principal to the Advance and Secure gametypes that are seen in some first person shooters. In WiC on team is tasked to defend a number of control points that must be captured in sequence by the opposing team. At the end of the round which is either triggered by the attacking team capturing all of the control points or the timer running out and having the defending team successfully defend some of the control points, the teams are switched. In order for the now defending team to win the game they must defend atleast up to the point where they could capture last round.
- Domination: Domination games are the bread and butter of online WiC play they require each team to capture as many control points as possible, the domination bar indicates who owns more control points, if one team is in possession of all of the control points then the bar fills a lot quicker and the team will be awarded a total domination victory.
- Tug Of War: This game type is similar to that of the concept of Frontlines: Fuel of War whereby there are number of control points arranged in a frontline orientation and both teams have to capture all of the control points on the frontline and then push back the opposing team to another frontline. The game concludes when one team captures three of the frontlines that are towards the enemies spawn.
Roles
Roles in WiC determine what units are available to you and at what price. Roles are chosen at the beginning of each map but can be changed during any point of the match, if you were to change roles your current unit are disbanded and you keep your current reinforcement points. There are four roles in WiC and they are as follows:
- Air: The Air class gives it's user several types of helicopters, notably the heavy helicopter which rains terror down on enemy armor in the form of rockets, as well as air-to-air helicopters, scout and transport helicopters.
- Armor: This class allows the player access to heavy, medium and light tanks as well as APCs (Armored Personnel Carriers) and amphibious vehicles , the heavy tank is the best armored unit in the game.
- Infantry: Players using the Infantry role have access to a wide range of infantry squads, including anti-tank, regular infantry (with anti-air capabilities), snipers, engineers, airborne infantry and transport vehicles.
- Support: The Support role is just very versatile class and has access to repair vehicle and several variations of , artillery trucks and Anti-Air vehicles, users of this role are often at in top three players of any match.
Whilst each role gives it's user use of "Heavy"(Heavy Armor, Heavy Anti-Air, Anti-Tank infantry etc.) exclusive vehicles and makes the price of "in-role" vehicles much cheaper, any role can buy units outside of it's role but at a higher cost than a player that is buying the same unit within his role. This creates the opportunity for players to prepare themselves for any eventuality.
Leaderboard
The leaderboard on massgate is constantly changing due to the influx of new players and the decay of the leaderboard.Due to the old leaderboard ranking making time more valuable than quality games massgate changed the way it ranks.Your leaderboard rank is your best 20 games played within 7 days. The higher your round scores the higher your leaderboard score.
Clan System
WiC has a Clan system that boasts a number of useful features. For starters joining a clan will automatically add all of the clan members to your contacts list in-game which will allow you to message each other and join whatever server they are in without having to add each member individually.
It also allows Clan Wars which allows users to play against other clans and the result of the match will be recored in the Clan statistics which are similar to player statistics but include medals that cannot be achieved through normal play.
Clans are also given both private and public forums on Massgate, as well as a guestbook for other players and clans to leave a quick message.
