Introduction
Teamspeak or TS2 is an extremely popular VOIP software commonly used by clans to communicate between their members. However, some commercial businesses have found use for TS2 as a very cost effective way of communication between employees.
History
The first ever TS was developed by Ralf Ludwig and Niels Werensteijn. They were faced with a problem that the VOIP services for games, developed by Microsoft were of poor quality and would only run on a Windows system.
Development of the first Teamspeak started around August 2001. A year later they released the first Teamspeak (Classic) which ran on Linux and Windows systems. The successor to the Classic Teamspeak is the most recent version of the programme. Teamspeak2 had been developed for more than 2 years after the first release of the VOIP software. The team had met their targets and accomplished what they had set out to do: to create a well known and functional VOIP programme.
Teamspeak 2 (TS2)
Server
A Teamspeak2 programme on a suitable server, can handle nearly 1000 clients all on the same server communicating with each other. Teamspeak servers are most commonly rented from game server companies although the TS2 company did release server files so that a normal user could host a TS2 server.
Functionality
Teamspeak 2 combined the admin side to the server into the main VOIP part. This meant that any admin to be done to the server could be done while using the server and using a admin drop down box. Each user registered on the server could be given different permissions.
Each user online would have a code next to their names. These combinations of letters represented what the user was capable of doing to the server. For example:
User (R SA)
This showed that this user was registered with the server(R) and also the server admin (SA). Other codes include:
- (CA) - Channel Admin
- (A) - Anonymous
- (V) - Given permission from a SA to speak
Quality of communication
This was one of the features that the TS2 development team wanted to perfect. Each channel with TS2 can be edited and assigned a codec. These codecs can range from only 3.1KBit to 25Kbit high quality codecs. These dramatically increased the quality of the sound being received.
Speex25.9 > Speex19.5 > Speex16.3 > Speex12.3 > GSM16.4 = GSM14.8 > Speex9.3 > Speex7.2 > WinCELP5.2 > Speex5.2 > CELP6.3 = CELP5.1 > Speex3.4
Being targeted at gamers, a feature where users could be in different channels but a channel leader could communicate between other channel leaders. This is especially useful for clan matches where the team is split into squads, but the squadleaders needed to be kept in touch with each other.
Because of its use while gaming, TS2 had to be low bandwidth demanding so as not to increase the lag or ping of the online gaming of a user. Even using the highest codecs possible, games and TS2 manage to run smoothly with each other.
Security
Teamspeak 2 is a very secure programme against hackers and other such attacks. The TS2 website guarantees that there are no flaws in the software that would allow a hacker to gain full access to the server admin. They also say that the weakness in Teamspeak 2 is the user having easy passwords and giving administration rights to strangers.
The future of Teamspeak
The most notable news for the future is the release of Teamspeak3 in early 2008.
