From EncyClanPedia
Creating and Editing Pages with MediaWiki is actually quite easy once you discover all of the controls.
The Wikibar:
The Wikibar appears when you click either create a page, or when you edit a page. It shows up on the top left hand corner of the editing box. Inside the Wiki bar are 11 buttons which are all meant to help you create the perfect wiki.
Bold -
Pressing this button brings up:
'''Bold text'''
- Merely delete the
Bold text part, and add whatever you wish to be bolded.
So if you wanted to bold Games, merely type in.
'''Games'''
Also note, you don't have to push this button to bold something. You can use the ' key to the left of your enter key.
Italics -
Pressing this button brings up:
''Italic text''
- Merely delete the
Italic text part, and add whatever you wish to be italicized.
So if you wanted to italicize Games, merely type in.
''Games''
Also note, you don't have to push this button to bold something. You can use the ' key to the left of your enter key.
Note!: You can both bold, and italicize something by having five Apostrophe's on each side of the words you want Bolded and Italicized. Therefore, if you want Games italicized, and bolded. Merely type in.
'''''Games'''''
Internal Link -
Pressing this button brings up:
[[Link title]]
- Merely delete the '
Link title part, and add the name of the
EncyClanPedia page that you want linked.
So if you wanted to link to the EncyClanPedia, merely type in.
[[EncyClanPedia]]
Please note that the internal link only works for EncyClanPedia Wiki pages. It does not work for outside links.
External Link -
Pressing this button brings up:
[http://www.example.com link title]
- Merely delete the
http://www.example.com part and add your link. To name the link, you need to delete the
link title part, and add the title of the external link you're linking us to.
So if you wanted to link to Total Gaming Network, merely type in.
[http://www.totalgamingnetwork.com Total Gaming Network]
Headline -
Pressing this button brings up:
== Headline text ==
- Merely delete the
Headline text part and add your Headline.
So if you wanted to make an Headline - headline like the one above. Simply type in.
== Headline - ==
You can also shrink the size of the heading, by adding additional ='s on each side of the headline, with level 5 being the smallest.
A level 5 headline for example would look like this.
Level 2 to 5 headlines don't have a divider, because they are so small, you'll have to add your own divider manually.
Anyhow, to make a level 5 headline, merely type this in.
====== A level 5 headline for example would look like this.======
You'll also note that the table of contents considers the smaller as 5.1 instead of 6. Well, this is because shrinking the size of your headlines is exactly how you make sub-headlines, which is then added accordingly to the table of contents.
Embedded Image -
Pressing this button brings up:
- Merely leave the
Image: part, and delete the
Example.jpg part. Then type in the image name of the image you want to include on your wiki. You can choose from the images found at the
Image Dump, or you can upload your own.
So lets say you went into the Image Dump, and picked out Tgn.JPG. You would add it by typing in.
Then you would get this.
For more on how to upload your own images, as well as how to add neat little image size/position codes please click Help:Images.
Media -
Pressing this button brings up:
[[Media:Example.ogg]]
- Merely leave the
Media: part, and delete the
Example.ogg part. Then type in the media name of the
Policy:Fair Use Media that you wish to upload. Please refer to
Policy:Fair Use Media before you do so however. There are many rules to follow when uploading media.
I will not give an example for this function, merely because of how delicate an issue it can become. For more information on uploading Free Content Media, please read both the Policy:Fair Use Media, and Help:Media.
Mathematical Formula (LaTeX) -
We to this day haven't found a really important use for it. If you're truly interested in it's use, please refer to: Wikipedia's LaTeX page.
No-Wiki -
Pressing this button brings up:
<nowiki>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki>
- This is mostly used to allow you to show code examples to people. However, it can also be a useful tool to use, if you find yourself accidentally linking or adding font to something that you don't mean to.
Signature -
Pressing this button brings up:
--~~~~
- This is how you add your signature. You can't personalize what shows up automatically by typing in this signature code; however, you can add onto it however you wish.
My signature is this:
--Dairuka 14:25, 22 November 2007 (PST)
Divider -
Pressing this button brings up:
----
- This is a divider. It causes a nifty horizontal line to come in between whatever you put the divider between.
Other Functions
Templates
Templates don't have a button. Instead you must type in
{{ }}
around the name of the template you wish to add to the page.
For example. If you wish to add the policy template to your page:
 |
This page represents an aspect of the official policy of EncyClanPedia. |
Type in the following:
{{Policy}}
For more information on the search, creation and use of templates. Please refer to Help:Templates.
Bullets
To make a bullet list, it's as simple as adding an asterisk behind each line of text that you want added to your bullet list.

*Three
*Four
*Five
To add a second bullet point within two bullets. Add two asterisks. You can add a third and fourth one also. It goes on indefinitely! For example:

***Four and three quarters.
****Four and nine tenths.
*Five
This code would produce the following bullet list:

Starting a New Page
There are several ways to start a new page.
Using Wikilinks
MediaWiki makes it very easy to link wiki pages using a standard syntax. If you (or anyone else) creates a link to an article that doesn't exist yet, the link will be coloured red, like this.
Clicking a red link, will take you to the edit page for the new article. Simply type your text, click save and the new page will be created.
Once the page has been created, the link will change from red to blue (purple for pages you've visited) indicating that the article now exists.
Using the URL
You can use the wiki's URL for creating a new page. The URL to an article of the wiki is usually something like this:
http://www.example.net/index.php/ARTICLE or
http://www.example.net/wiki/ARTICLE
If you replace ARTICLE with the name of the page you wish to create, you will be taken to a blank page which indicates that no article of that name exists yet. Clicking the "edit" page tab at the top of the page will take you to the edit page for that article, where you can create the new page by typing your text, and clicking submit.
From the search page
If you search for a page that doesn't exist (using the search box and 'go' button on the left of the page) then you will be provided with a link to create the new page. (Note that this technique doesn't work if you use the 'search' button).
Create redirects to your new page
Don't forget to setup redirects when you create a page. If you think another person may search for the page you've created by using a different name or spelling, please create the proper redirect(s). See Help:Redirect
