Having different versions of Battlefield coexist
When testing Beta patches or viewing old BattleRecorder recordings you sometimes desire to have a different version of Battlefield than the current released patch.
It is actually possible to create a setup so that you can have two (or more) versions at the same time and can activate them as desired from a shortcut.
The steps below has been tested with Battlefield 2142 on Windows XP, but are also likely to work with other versions.
Backup your current installation
The first step is to create a backup of your current installation.
Locate the relevant Battlefield folder in "My Documents" and make a copy. Both version of BF will be running from the same folder in My Documents, so it is nice to have a backup if the new patch messes up your settings.
Upgrading
If you are upgrading to a higher version you need to make a copy of your battlefield directory.
Name it something like "Battlefield 2142 Current".
Now you can apply the patch, and proceed to Creating Shortcuts
Downgrading
If you are downgrading to a lower patch you just need to rename the battlefields directory, since you will be doing a complete install of the old version. Rename it to "Battlefield 2142 Current"
Install BF2142 and apply the desired patch.
If you encounter problem when installing becasue of some kind of failed version check, you have two options.
- Copy "Battlefield 2142 Current" back to its original name so you now have both folders, and then perform a unistall.
- Do a Manual Uninstallation of Battlefield 2142, specifically the registry part. Do not remove your local settings under My Documents
Proceed to Creating shortcuts
Creating Shortcuts
After you have created your new installation, I suggest renaming its directory to something like "Battlefield 2142 <Patch number>" and rename "Battlefield 2142 Current" back to "Battlefield 2142"
You can now test that your old shortcuts still launches the game in the current version.
Open the properties for your new shortcut, and modify "Target" and "Working Directory" so they point at your new Battlefield directory.
Example:
Target :"C:\Programs\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142 <Patch number>\BF2142.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1"
Working directory: "C:\Programs\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142 <Patch number>"
Rename the shortcut to "Battlefield 2142 <Patch number>", and you should now be able to launch your desired version of Battlefield just by selecting the relevant shortcut.
