First-person shooter
From EncyClanPedia
Though FPS games are strictly defined as a player's ability to view the environment through the first person perspective of the character they are playing, some games still qualify under the genre of FPS by covering most aspects of a FPS game. Games such as GTA are a prime example of how the community has taken it as an FPS rather than the Third Person Shooter it is.

Platforms
First person shooters are generally for the PC, though notable games have been released on other platforms such as consoles, a large percentage of FPS games released are for the PC. Some games are also released for multiple platforms, such as the Grand Theft Auto series. But the number of FPS games released for consoles and other platforms is increasing, the previous lack of such games in the mentioned platforms is primarily due to the difficulties of community created packs or mods, which are in plenty in the PC platform.
Some FPS games have even been released on portable gaming system such as the PSP, where technology has enabled us to play such powerful games in limited hardware, though the quality of the game cannot be compared to their counter-part PC release, the content of the game is generally the same.

Controversy
Due to the current level of realism, graphically and by bringing forward weapons or other objects close to their real life counter-parts, critics, politicians and concerned parents are worried of the stability and security of the people that play such games. One significant example that links directly to gaming culture is the Columbine High School Massacre, where both shooters were avid fans of the game Doom, their passion for the game extended to the creation of maps that somewhat represented his High School, such levels still exist and are known as the "Harris levels".
Another such controversy, is Grand Theft Auto, a game that hosts a plethora of wrong doings, ranging from prostitution, car-jacking, reckless driving, shooting, racism, the list goes on. Though no clear incident has occurred to prove or support evidence of the effects of playing GTA and other such games, critics and the aforementioned attack the immorality and social ethics that are violated by playing these games.
