Game Interface
Q: How do I display my FPS? (Frames per second)
- It's as simple as typing /cg_drawFPS
Q: How do I know what actions I've bound to which keys?
- Simply type /bindlist in the console to know what you have binded and removing one or more. [1]
Q: How do I remove a key from being bound?
- Simply type /unbind <key> to remove a specific key. [2]
Q: How do I change my name?
- Press escape, then go to multiplayer options. You should be able to change your in game name there.
Q: How do you change what keys on your keyboard refer to which action?
- Press escape, then go to your controls and you can set certain keys. If you make a mistake you can always press default and return them to their original settings.
Quick Chat
Q: What is Quick Chat?
- Quick chat are bind functions that allow you to talk to your team-mates faster than you'd be able to by typing in the general chat box.
- For easier quick chat, you can try Arnoldio_SLO's quick bind tips out for a spin:
- /bind x openscriptmenu quickresponses 1 (yes sir)
- /bind x openscriptmenu quickcommands 1 (follow me)
- /bind x openscriptmenu quickstatements 1 (contact)
For better use, you can bind it on numpad 0- kp_ins
. (period)- kp_del
- - kp_end
- - kp_downarrow
- - kp_pgdn
- - kp_leftarrow
- - kp_5
- - kp_rightarrow
- - kp_home
- - kp_uparrow
- - kp_pgup
enter- kp_enter
minus sign- kp_minus
plus sign- kp_plus [3]
General
Q: What is Hardcore Mode?
- Hardcore Mode is a mode meant to cater to the players seeking a challenge. The Heads-up-Display (HUD) is removed, damage received and inflicted increases exponentially, crosshairs are removed from your screen and friendly fire is enabled.
Q: Why does everybody on my team shoot me when I stand in a doorway?
- You're blocking them. They can't move through you, so rather than waiting for you to move out of the way, they're killing you to move you out of the way. Try not to stand in the doorways, and you'll find less team-mates are trying to kill you.
Gameplay
Q: Why do I always die when I'm on a stationary weapon?
- You're an easy target. Try not to stay on a stationary weapon for too long, unless you have a death wish.[4]
- It'd also help to place some claymores, if you plan on staying on a mounted weapon for a long time. It prevents people from sneaking up on you. [5]
Q: I see people getting UAV, Airstrikes and Helicopters - why can't I use these?
- The things you make reference to are rewards for attaining a particular kill streak. Three kills in a row allow access to team UAV, five for an airstrike and eight for a helicopter.
Q: How do I activate these rewards?
- The default button to press is six on your keyboard. This can be changed if you wish.
Q: KillCam shows me staring at a wall without firing, when I was actually shooting at the enemy when I died?
- KillCam only records the position of the players and the shots fired by the killer. It is a simulation of what happend, not a recording. [6]
Q: How do I plant/defuse the bomb in sabotage games?
- Press and hold the use key (default "f") while the progress bar fills up. You are unable to use your weapon while doing this.

Weapons
A full list of the weapons usable in Call of Duty 4 can be found on our Call of Duty 4 Main Page, Weapons section.
Q: How do you get the Gold skin for a weapon?
- A: you have to complete all the weapon challenges for a certain class of weapons to unlock the gold gun for that set of weapons, with the exception of the gold Desert Eagle which is unlocked at rank 55. The gold weapons you can achieve are:
- Assault: AK47
- SMG: Mini Uzi
- LMG: M60
- Shotgun: M1014
- Sniper: SVD (Dragonov)[7]
Q: I always seem to get killed by a knife, but can never do it myself. Why can't I seem to kill with a knife?
- The knife's hit detection stays in the same position for a half of second, allowing you to adjust your aim. When you swing and you miss, simply tilt your view to the person you're intending to kill, and it may still hit them.[8]
Q: How does everybody use <insert weapon here> so fast? I always have to reach for <insert key>
- You can bind weapons to a specific mouse button. Binding your knife to a mouse button is especially useful for close quarter combat that catches you off guard.
Q: How did my enemy kill me when I was hiding behind a car!? I didn't see any grenades!
- He blew up the car which can seriously damage or kill you. Cars are destructible in CoD4 of course, and bullets are a good way to do it. Next time you hear gunfire when you're hiding behind a car, you better run to take cover. [9]
Q: I put down a claymore, and then it blew up on me unexpectedly! What happened!?
- Somebody shot it. C4 and Claymores can be detonated by gunfire.[10]
Q: Can I detonate my own C4 or Claymore with bullets?
- Yes. This is actually a good way to defend yourself, while placing heavy explosives. For example, while you can detonate a stick of C4 by double tapping the use key, you can just as easily switch to a gun to defend yourself from incoming enemies. Then when they're in range, set off the C4 with your own gunfire.[11]
Q: How do I reload faster with the G3?
- You can actually reload faster on all of the guns, by double tapping on your weapon switch key (Default 1 or 2) as soon as the bullets fill back up in your HUD. Of course, this trick works better for some guns such as the G3, than it does for the faster reloading guns.[12]
Q: How much damage does <insert weapon here> do?

Support and Technical
Q:When I hit join server it says "Key Code Error. Key Code already in use". Does that mean someone else stole my key?
- A: Not necessarily. Sometimes if you disconnect from a server, or your game crashes, it still recognizes you "playing" the game, and your key as in-use. Usually, waiting until the map changes or restarting your PC, etc, will correct this. Give it some time (30-90 minutes should do in most cases), and try different servers as well. [15]
Q: How do I use a USB controller (Such as the X-box 360 one?) on my PC?
- Alternatively you can also use RedCl0ud's Mouse/Keyboard Emulator which allows you to map your Mouse/Keyboard keys to a controller. It's free unlike Pinnaclegameprofiler, except you'll be expected to map the controller yourself.
Reload before going into battle!
A good controller set up to use with RedCl0ud is:
- Left Stick:
- [X-] : [VK_A]
- [X+] : [VK_D]
- [Y-] : [VK_W]
- [Y+] : [VK_S]
- Right Stick:
- [X Rotation-] : [Mouse Move X Neg]
- [X Rotation+] : [Mouse Move X Pos]
- [Y Rotation-] : [Mouse Move Y Neg]
- [Y Rotation+] : [Mouse Move Y Pos]
- D-Pad:
- [Hat Switch Up] : [VK_C]
- [Hat Switch Right] : [VK_E]
- [Hat Switch Down] : [VK_CONTROL]
- [Hat Switch Left] : [VK_Q]
- Buttons:
- [Button 1] : [VK_SPACE]
- [Button 2] : [VK_6]
- [Button 3] : [VK_4]
- [Button 4] : [VK_G]
- [Button 5] : [VK_SHIFT]
- [Button 6] : [MOUSE WHEEL BACK]
- [Button 7] : [VK_F]
- [Button 8] : [VK_R]
- Triggers:
- [Button 11] : [Mouse Left Click]
- [Button 12] : [Mouse Right Click]
To set up a button or axis, simply double click its name, then choose the corresponding VK / Mouse movement you want for it
This is mostly for the normal Xbox Joypad but im sure the 360 one has the same buttons / axis (except the extra triggers which are in place of white / black, which are buttons 5 and 6 )
Hope it helps.[16]
Q: What should I do if I want to reinstall CoD4:MW?
- Save your profiles folder before you do anything. If you fail to, you will lose them, and you'll then have to start all over again from scratch. It's as simple as putting the profiles folder on a flash drive, zip drive, or even a floppy disk if you're reformatting, or just temporarily moving it before you uninstall and reinstall CoD4.
Q: So where do I find the profiles folder with my profiles then?
- Your ranks and unlocks are stored locally on your hard drive in a file called "mpdata", usually located in the following default pathway:
- DVD/CD Version: C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles\<your_name_here>
- Steam Version: C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam Apps\common\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles\<your_name_here>
- Vista: C:\Users\<Vista Name Here>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles\<your_profile_name>[17]
Q: I keep timing out while connecting to server! How can I stop this?
- You can't really stop this, but you can improve your chances of connecting by typing /seta cl_connectionAttempts 30 into the console. This increases the number of connection attempts you make before you time out of the connection.
/seta cl_connectionAttempts 30 was posted originally by: Alex98uk, Whiskey, and m3ow, all prominent TGN members.
Q: I saw somebody who is Rank 55 after only 1 week of release! Is there a cheat for this?
- Unfortunately, because the statistics are not server-side, but instead are client-side, there are already an abundant number of cheats that will give a player Rank 55 for essentially no work. Because this is cheating, I refuse to tell you how this is done. However because the game has been out for longer than a week now, there are already many people out there who're rank 55. The importance of Rank in Call of Duty 4 is no where nearly as important as it is on other games like Battlefield 2 - Pay no attention to a person's rank, it only tells you how many and what types of perks this person gets. Not much else.
Demo Recording
Q: How do I record a demo of my game?
- A: Simply type "/record <filename>" in the console to begin recording, and "/stoprecord" to finish. The lower left corner of the screen will display the size of the file during the recording.
Q: Where can I find my demo files?
- A: The demo files will be stored in your "Call Of Duty 4/main/demos" folder
Q: How to I view my demos?
- A1: The way it is supposed to work is that you type "/demo <demo-name>" in the console, but this is bugged and does not work (in version 1.4). Instead you can use a third party program to launch the demos, like COD4Player from Cybopat, which also allows you to change playback speed and camera angle. To stop the playback type /disconnect in the console
- A2:
- Go to "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\Mods\ModWarfare" and create a folder called "demos". Open that folder and paste "test.dm_1". (your COD4 folder may be located differently)
- Open CoD4 Multiplayer back up, and click the Mods button at the main menu. Select "ModWarfare" and press Launch. Call of Duty should restart, this time with a blueish tint.
- Now, open up the console and type "/demo <demo-name>". Your demo will now be loaded and played back. There are no control functions (pause, rewind, etc.)
- Type /disconnect to close out of your demo.[18]
