As previously mentioned, CS:S involves 2 teams (Counter Terrorist vs Terrorists) fighting against each other in the hope of winning the rounds. There are two types of maps, De_ and Cs_. De_ are bomb maps where the objective for terroists is to get to a designated bomb site, plant the bomb and protect it until it explodes. The objective for counter terrorists on De_ maps is to defend the bomb sites, and if the bomb gets planted, to diffuse the bomb before it explodes.

Cs_ maps involve hostages, sometimes lovingly referred to as hossies. The objective for the terrorists is to defend the hostages from the counter terrorists who are trying to rescue them. For the counter terrorists to rescue the hostages, they have to be collected and escorted back to a specified hostage collection area.

Dynamic Weapon Pricing (DWP)

This update was introduced around 2 years after the first release of CS:S. During the game, players have chances to build up cash funds to buy expensive weapons by killing more people and winning. The DWP feature allowed servers to use a logarythm (updated every week) to calculate the prices of weapons dependent on the actual real life global demand and prices for the weapons.

However after the excitement of thinking of playing with real life pricing systems has mostly died off, DWP has now been stopped.

Weapons

CS:S offers players to try out a vast selection of weapons. Some of the most popular being the Desert Eagle (pistol), M4 (Rifle) and the Ak47 (Rifle). The full range of weapon types available to each team is: Pistols, Sub Machine Guns, Shotguns, Rifles, Machine Guns, and Grenades

Modding

Counter Strike Source has been heavily modded. Most common mods are the Source SDK Plugins which can be installed on a compatible CS:S server and used using RCON commands. The Mani Admin Pluginis a plugin created to aid server owners in the administration of their servers. This "fun" plugin not only allowed the common administration commands (kick, ban etc) it also allowed for a wide range of fun commands that slapped, froze and even allowed a player to zoom around the map immortal.

Possible the most well known mod, is the Quake Sounds Pack which can be installed on servers and during gameplay announces things such as: "Monster kill", "First Blood" and "Holy Sh!t!".
