Contents

Introduction

In Company of Heroes you follow a company as they land in Normandy and fight through the war. You can command a variety of units ranging form standard infantry to tanks and armored vehicles. They're two armies in Company of Heroes; the Nazi German Wehrmacht and the Americans, each have their own pros and cons..

Gameplay

Game Modes

  • Victory Point Control - Victory Point Control maps, have multiple victory points spread around the map. The player must capture these points and try and hold them. When a side has captured more victory points, the other team's points start to drain, much like the ticket system in Battlefield Series. Once one team's tickets decrease to zero, the game is over and the other team wins.
  • Annihilation - Annihilation maps, are much like a conventional real-time strategy game mode. The player must destroy all the enemy buildings, excluding observation posts.

Resources

In Company of Heroes, they're are three resources; manpower, munitions and fuel.

  • Manpower - Manpower is used for all unit production
  • Munitions - Munitions is used to upgrade squads and vehicles, as well as use their special abilities.
  • Fuel - Fuel is used to purchase vehicles and global upgrades

In order to collect these resources, the player must capture certain points on the map. The more of these points the player has under their control, the more resources the player obtains. This forces the player to constantly expand their territory. All these points are connected by a supply line, so if the enemy takeover a point in the supply line, all the other points become isolated from the player, possibly severely reducing a player's resource production. At a cost of Manpower, a player can build observation points on a resource point to increase the production rate of resources of that point, as well as fortifying it from enemy assaults.

Buildings

To convert a building into a field barracks; allowing the production of certain units from that building, the player must occupy that building. Infantry units which occupy the building can use them as cover from enemy attacks; but this limits their firing range, as they can only fire out of windows or holes in the building, this can possibly make them vulnerable to sniper fire.

To destroy the building the enemy can use certain weapons which are extremely effective against units inside the building. These include tank fire, satchel charges and rocket launchers and units equipped with flamethrowers can set the building on fire forcing the units out, but while inside the building units are protected from small arm fire from infantry and the building can survive limited tank fire before it collapses.

Units

Company of Heroes takes place in World War II, which allows the player to decide to play as the Axis or Allied forces. Both of these factions have different tactics of play. Axis forces are more expensive than they're Allied counterparts, and come in fewer numbers but their firepower is considerably more powerful than the Allied forces. Allied forces are fairly cheaper than the Axis forces and come in larger numbers but are less powerful than the Axis forces.

Multiplayer

Company of Heroes utilises Relic's new online gaming system called 'Relic Online', which allows 2-8 player matches through the Internet or LAN. The new system has a ranking system and an auto-match feature, that previous systems lacked.

Expansion Packs

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is a standalone expansion to Company of Heroes, in which the player continues the battle with two new campaign's, one featuring the British Liberation of Caen and the other featuring the Panzer Elites fight against the airborne invasion, 'Operation Market Garden'.
