Plot
Two global factions, the "Global Defense Initiative of the United Nations" and the cult-like "Brotherhood of Nod" battle over control of a crystalline substance called "Tiberium." Tiberium is an extra-terrestrial substance that landed with a meteorite crash in 1990. The meteor landed near the Tiber, river in Italy, hence the name "Tiberium."
The Nod, lead by a messianic figure called Kane, quickly see potential for the new substance start gathering as much as they can for research and use. By this time, Tiberium has become a precious commodity and is valued highly on world markets. Some of the Nod turn to terrorism to gain more Tiberium. In response the GDI intervenes, but instead sets off a world war.
Setting
Command and Conquer is set in an alternate timeline in earth during the year 1995. Up to 1990 the world has followed an extremely similar historical path to that of real history. All the same governments exist, except that there are only two major factions in the world by 1995 along with the existence of some different technology and the presence of the substance, Tiberium.
GDI Campaign
As the GDI, you, the player, are Under the command of General Mark Jamison Sheppard. Your goal is to remove the Nod from Europe and finally besiege the Temple of Nod where Kane has located the headquarters of the Nod.
NOD Campaign
As the Nod, you are in charge of carrying out missions assigned to you by the second in command, Seth. After a mission against the US given to you without Kane's approval, Kane commits suicide. After this your primary goal is to take over the entire continent of Africa. From there you take control of the GDI's ion cannon and destroy one of the GDI's major landmarks (the White House, Big Ben, etc.)
