Gunships

The Gunships in Battlefield 2142 serves in the roles of both Ground Attack and Air Superiority. They can pursue enemy targets at high speed or linger over points of interest to unload on enemies on the ground. The price for this versatility is a slower speed than jets of Battlefield 2, which makes them much more exposed to ground based fire.

To add a bit of staying power they come equipped with a shield that will protect against projectile weapons, but not the EMP effects of certain weapons. The shield only has energy enough for 30 seconds of sustained use, but will recharge automatically between uses (default "x"). In a tight spot the Gunship comes with afterburner which gives a speed boost for a limited time (default L-Shift)

The aircrafts of BF 2142 are notoriously hard to control for a beginner, so the common advice for those who which to use them is "Learn to fly off-line". The Gunships are very valuable assets, and a inexperienced pilot is likely to kill both himself and his gunner in a few seconds.

The Gunships are found on Titans and certain bases with Landingpads, usually the main uncapable base. Hovering over the landingzone on Titans or groundbases will resupply and rearm the Gunships, but like other vehicles this can also be achieved by resupply crates or respectively Engineers or Support soldiers. Designed as a two-man weapon system. the main ground to air weapons are only controllable by the gunner.

The "Auras" of the upgraded medic/ammo/repair systems are usually of little use to the Gunship pilots, since they do not get close enough to allied vehicles. However the info provided by a IDS-1 or PDS-1 attached to the Gunship can be valuable.

Weapons

  • Rockets
The pilot controlled weapons on the Gunship are rockets, which are unguided against ground vehicles. They do have a certain heat seeking ability against airborne vehicles, but still depends on the pilot finding the optimal angle of attack.
  • Cannon
The default weapon of the gunner is the turret mounted cannon. It allows the gunner to cover a wide field of view, especially if he switches to the cockpit-less view (default "c")
  • Guided missiles
Right clicking will switch between the cannon and the TV guided missiles. The HUD will indicate targets, but the missiles has not seeking ability, relying 100% on the gunner guiding them to target with his mouse. If the gunner switches back to the cannon before the missiles have impacted, they will switch to dumb fire and continue in a straight line. This allows the gunner to release control as soon as the missile is aimed at the target, which can be useful in some situations.
As a pilot it is important to realize that the gunners cross-hairs are located significantly below your own, so you need to aim high if you are setting your gunner up for a missile shot.
