The Nekomata

The Nekomata differs significantly from the rest of the Tanks of the Battlefield series, since it lack the tracks found on traditional tanks, but instead relies on a hovering body with no turret, requiring the driver to rotate the entire body to aim the cannon. Controlling the Nekomata is a bit like flying a gunship at low attitude. It can move in all four directions with the standard infantry WASD keys, but unlike a solider, it will not stop moving the second you release the keys because it has no friction with the ground. This can make the Nekomata a dangerous companion for friendly troops.

Because the Nekomata has no turret, aiming and heading is controlled as one with the mouse. This allow the Nekomata to always have its strong front armor facing the enemy even when circle-strafing. The downside is that the Nekomata is not as stable a weapon platform as the Tiger, which can be felt when engaging targets at long range. The hover engines also mean that when firing, the the recoil will push the tank back a short distance, which makes aiming and firing on slopes difficult.

Moving diagonally will allow the tank to move faster. Even though it is a hover tank, the Nekomata will not float above water, and will still lose armor and die underwater.

Tanks in general

Although the tanks are the only vehicles in BF2142 with significant difference, they still are used much the same. The most important knowledge for a new tank driver is that most of the backside of the tank is a huge weak spot, allowing engineers to kill the tank with one well placed shot. For that reason, tank drivers should avoid entering areas with plenty of cover, instead shelling it from the outside and letting infantry do the actual capture.

If you need to remain stationary with a tank, make sure to keep its vulnerable back protected, preferably by a wall.

Weapons

Main Gun

The main gun of the Tank is powerful against both infantry and vehicles. A well placed shot can even down a gunship. The traditional coaxial machine gun on alt-fire has been replaced with a powerful zoom, that allows the tank to work in the role of long range artillery. This makes a worthy opponent for the walker which lack such long range capability, and also allows the tank to shell strongpoints out of harm's way. The long reload time and limited elevation of the main gun makes it important for a tank to have a gunner as protection against gunships and infantry.

Machine Gun

The only weapon of the tank gunner is the turret mounted machine-gun. Unlike Battlefield 2, the machine gun turret is remote controlled and the gunner cannot be sniped. In contrary to the machine gun on the FAVs, this gun is a very efficient AA weapon. Out in the open, the main concern of the gunner should be to scan the skies for gunships, while in more urban areas he should cover the vulnerable back against ambushes by AV soldiers.
