Gameplay

Battlefield 1942 (and later games in the Battlefield Series) requires a great focus on cooperative gameplay. Two opposing teams are assigned 'tickets', and the team which reduce the other's ticket count to 0 first wins. This can be achieved by scoring kills, and more importantly by capturing the majority of control points (which also act as spawn points) in order to cause the other team's ticket to decrease at a constant rate (a.k.a. bleeding). This is the main gameplay for Conquest mode.

Coop mode and Singleplayer mode are similar to Conquest mode, but allows the player to play with computer controlled players (a.k.a. bots).

Other modes are available for online play such as Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Objective, of which players of one team must destroy certain object(s) belonging to the other team.

Classes

Battlefield 1942 features 5 classes for all factions and all maps. Each has its own distinctive role to carry out its own task and to support other teammates in the battle. All kits have a knife, a pistol, grenades (with exception for engineer) and a parachute.

  • Scout

The scout has a sniper rifle for picking off enemies in a long distance and a pair of binoculars to spot enemies for artillery. When a target has been spotted using the binoculars, friendly soldiers using artillery equipment can have a better view for indirect fire to guide their shots to the target. The scout is however weak against ground troops at close range due to low rate of fire.

  • Assault

The assault class has a light machinegun capable of automatic fire for general purposes. It is the class with the fewest equipments.

  • Anti-tank

The anti-tank class has a anti-tank rocket launcher, whose purpose is to take out enemy tanks and other ground vehicles. This class is however very weak against ground troops.

  • Medic

The medic has a submachine gun capable of automatic fire and a medic pack for healing himself and friendly soldiers. Contrary to scouts and engineers, the medic's submachine gun does not have a long range.

  • Engineer

Armed with a rifle, remote detonate explosives, mines, and a wrench/spanner, the engineer has the most items in his inventory. The explosives can be used to destroy vehicles, fixed gun emplacements, or to ambush enemies in vital locations. The mines can destroy any vehicles that travel over them. The wrench/spanner can be used to repair any vehicles or stationary weapons, which makes this class common to cooperate with tanks. The engineer is however weak against ground troops at close range due to low rate of fire.
